    The Yuck ‘n Yum Compendium

Scotland’s soi-disant premier arts zine Yuck ‘n Yum was published quarterly from 2008 to 2013. For the first time ever, we’ve collected every issue into one 600+ page volume.

The complete zine is faithfully presented in its original A5 paperback format, minus the staples. We’ve also included some extra goodies: the very first lo-fi issues of the zine, some special editions, and some new words from our friends too. Relive every high, every low, every Yuck and Yum of those halcyon days in glorious high-definition black and white.

Interregnum Exhibition Launch @ SOIL Gallery Seattle 03.05.18

When we officially launched the Yuck ’n Yum compendium last month, realising the book was just too big for one continent, we linked up two of our favourite artist-run spaces for the launch. In Scotland, Generator Projects hosted an evening event, but thanks to the magic of time zones, the day was just beginning in SOIL Gallery, Seattle, USA.

YnY’s Alex Tobin flew out to Seattle to meet the entire YnY America team (Morgan Cahn), and together they installed the Interregnum exhibition at SOIL. Featuring new works from Darren Banks, Lizz Brady, O.B. De Alessi, Kirsty McKeown, Holger Mohaupt, Thomas Moore, Janie Nicoll, Val Norris, Greer Pester, and Lada Wilson, Interregnum is Yuck ‘n Yum’s first project in America, and a really exciting exhibition. You can download the press release here.

With the first print run of the Yuck ‘n Yum Compendium launching at both SOIL and Generator Projects, a video link connected the two venues, allowing early-bird Seattlites to stop by and see live performances happening half a world a way in Scotland.

Then, it was Seattle’s turn for an evening event, with Interregnum opening to a full crowd.

Compendium Launch @ Generator Projects 03.05.18

On Thursday 3rd May Yuck ’n Yum launched its forthcoming Compendium with an all star singing, dancing and performance art lineup at Dundee’s Generator Projects. On the bill that night were The Onion Club, Haystack Monolith, Bob Flambe and Lada Wilson, and we even had a live sporadic hook up via video link to our Interregnum show opening at the SOIL Gallery in Seattle.

Below are a few photos of what transpired:

Live music from the tenebrous cabaret reimaginings of The Onion Club.

The fevered highland acid of Haystack Monolith.

Longtime YNY launch event favourite Bob Flambe.

An exclusive performance intervention from the divine Lada Wilson.

    Compendium Launch

The Yuck ’n Yum Compendium is very nearly here! It can decorate your coffee table or just prop open an awkward door, and it contains over 600 pages of every zine we’ve ever published along with flyers, photos, interviews and assorted miscellany too. The Compendium will launch at Generator Projects in Dundee at 7pm on Thursday 3rd May. We have live music from the tenebrous cabaret reimaginings of The Onion Club, the fevered highland acid of Haystack Monolith, longtime YNY launch event favourite Bob Flambe and an exclusive performance intervention from the divine Lada Wilson. The event will be hooked up via video link to our Interregnum show opening at the SOIL Gallery in Seattle. Launch attendees can get their hands on the Compendium for the knockdown price of £15. We really hope to see you there!

    Interregnum Exhibition

You are cordially invited to Yuck ‘n Yum’s first ever American exhibition. Don’t live in America? Don’t worry! We’ll be simultaneously communing with our friends Generator Projects in Dundee via a magic web portal. Our exhibition Interregnum opens at Soil Artist-Run Gallery in Seattle, WA, on the 3rd May 2018.

The show features exciting new works on from 10 artists on the topic of “interregnum” – a time of unrest between regimes. We’re in a transitionary period as a collective, and there is something very strange occurring in the places where we live. Brexit?! Trump?! Yuck ‘n Yum now looks to its network of artists to explore these times when normal rules no longer apply. Can people come together in this chaotic time to upend the status quo? A multitude of realities are seething and churning across the Internet and into the streets.

Excitingly, this exhibition doubles up as a launch party for the long-awaited Yuck ‘n Yum compendium. People have whispered of it for years, and at long last it’s a real thing that exists! Every issue of Yuck ‘n Yum zine (plus some yummy extra treats) compiled into one very hefty volume. It’s A5, black-and-white, and possibly fatal to drop on someone. The compendium is produced with the kind support of our friends Generator Projects, and we will be launching it at Generator at the same time as the Interregnum opening on the 3rd May (19:00 UK time). Soil in Seattle and Generator Projects in Dundee will be joined together via video link for this launch, in a display of international harmony that is, quite frankly, utterly uncharacteristic of these interregnal times. Special guests will feature at both.

    Seattle here we come!

Remember that big news we were on about? Well, here it is. In May Yuck ’n Yum will open an exhibition at SOIL Gallery in Seattle, USA. What is SOIL, I hear you ask? Well, SOIL was founded in 1995 as a not-for-profit cooperative space established, supported and operated by local artists. Yuck ’n Yum will present the work of artists like YOU, selected by open call.

The exhibition’s theme is Interregnum. We live in uncertain times when normal rules no longer apply. We’re inviting submissions from artists who are navigating this strange new world and trying to make sense of it all.

The show will run from Thursday May 3rd until Saturday June 2nd. We’ll be installing digital prints alongside projections and text, plus there’ll be performative elements at the simultaneous compendium launch in Seattle, USA and at Generator Projects in Dundee, Scotland.

So what do we want? Just a short proposal circa 200 words with 2 images of your previous work and/or a sketch (images 4MB max each or a link to your website). We’re offering £50 fee, deadline for proposals is Sunday 25th February with delivery of final digital works Saturday 31st March. Send submissions / queries to info@yucknyum.org

    We Are Reborn

Yuck ’n Yum is back and we have some exciting news for you. May 2018 will see us expanding into international territory as we stage an exhibition at SOIL Gallery in Seattle, USA. The show will coincide with the upcoming Dundee release of the long-awaited Yuck ’n Yum Compendium, which will launch on two continents simultaneously.

    We want to involve YOU!

The AGK returns and Happy 2018

Yuck ‘n Yum has been making a song and dance about it!

At this year’s NEoN digital arts festival, the AGK karaoke video competition took place at Dundee’s West Ward Works and the crowd went wild for singalong action. Tackling subzero temperatures, punters bravely knocked back the drink and took on our archive of AGK classics with selections ranging from Steve Reich to Lady Gaga all available for the choosing. Vocal performances were enthusiastic as ever, the battle went on throughout the night and we hope to bring another instalment your way in the very near future.

As for the YNY itinerary, 2018 will see us making advances into international territory as well as lining up something big with our friends at GENERATORprojects. Keep your eyes and ears alert, and we’ll keep you posted with all the news.

What this means is that our website is back online with a new look (coming soon), there’s some exciting new projects afoot and your favourite user-generated art karaoke event the AGK is back in a matter of days as part of the NEoN festival.

On Saturday 11th November, the final night of NEoN will see us setting up a booth at Dundee’s West Ward Works. Revellers can consult our unique archive of artist-fashioned videos and enter into the wildest karaoke competition out there.

Keep your eyes and ears alert for future announcements, because 2018 will see Yuck ’n Yum achieve full spectrum dominance with publishing ventures and international showings. Our social media channels will be thoroughly rejigged and we’ll be sure to keep you posted every step of the way.

PS: Note from the Yuck ‘n Yum 🕸Webmaster🕸
During our hiatus, yucknyum.com was snapped up by an opportunistic and fleet-of-foot web squatter. We’re now at yucknyum.org (you’re looking at it). There’s a few bits and pieces to iron out after transferring the site over here: the AGK archive is currently offline, but rest assured our incredible archive of amazing karaoke content is on its way back ASAP.

    Love from 🕸The Webmaster🕸

    We are hibernating

Yuck ‘n Yum is  currently in a deep sleep, our collective body has been cryogenically frozen until a time that is conducive to our reawakening.

Whilst we are sleeping, please look at our archive and if you would like to host your own AGK Mobile Karaoke you can contact us on our facebook page.

Thank you to everyone who supported, contributed and participated in our activities over the years.

    One love
